Safest Places For Beginners To Learn Surfing

Safest Places Beginners Learn Surfing

Have you ever fancied learning to surf? Are you intimidated by the big waves? If so, you’ll be glad to learn there are some amazing beginner-friendly surfing spots in the country. Please continue reading below as we check out some of the best beaches for beginners to learn surfing.

1) Byron Bay

Byron Bay is one of the most well-known surfing spots in Australia. It’s beginner-friendly yet has plenty of opportunities for more experienced surfers too, making it a good option for groups of mixed ability. The calm waters make this a safe spot for learning.

If you’ve surfed before and want something accessible to regain your confidence, you’ll find the waters perfect for that. If you’re a complete beginner and you’re hoping to have your hand held while you learn you can always book some surfing lessons at the Soul Surf School.

2) First Point, Noosa Heads

First Point at Noosa, Queensland is a prime surfing spot with small waves that are perfect for beginners. One of the only downsides to this spot is that it’s incredibly well-known. During peak surfing season, the waves can get busy, and since most of the surfers in the water are beginners, collisions between surfers are common. Learn to Surf Noosa runs group surfing lessons twice a day, and there are individual/private lessons available too.

The good news is the water is warm all year round, and if you can catch a day when it’s relatively quiet, you’ll enjoy long, low and slow waves that you can ride gently into the beach. It’s just a short paddle back out after, too, so you won’t tire yourself out getting lots of time on the waters.

3) Greenmount Beach, Coolangatta

Greenmount Beach is found in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast. This beautiful Queensland surfing spot is a good choice for beginners thanks to the relatively calm, warm waters and steady waves. Surfing lessons are available at the Gold Coast Surf School. It’s a picturesque spot and the waters are always clear. This surf school boasts a great safety record, too.

When the swell is gentle, beginners will find it easy to ride the waves for hundreds of meters, enjoying the feeling of surfing like a pro. However, like First Point, the water can be quite crowded during peak surfing season, which means collisions are likely.

Schedule your trip in the off-season, though, and you’ll have a good surfing experience. It’s a great place for a beginner to learn.

4) Crescent Head, New South Wales

Crescent Head in New South Wales is a destination popular with surfers of all abilities and is home to the Surfaris Surf Retreat. This destination is particularly popular with longboarders but has a good reputation across all surfer cultures. When people are done surfing, they can head to one of the many locals for a drink and some great live music.

Beginners will find the head itself an enjoyable spot when the weather is right. On days when the waves are bigger, they’ll want to move down into the bay for more gentle surf. There are some spectacular long right-handers to ride, but it’s important to keep a lookout because this spot is a point break, meaning there are rocks to ruin your day.

Great Surf Is On Your Doorstep

Whether you’re a beginner or up to some of the more adventurous monster waves, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for good surfing on Australia’s beaches. No matter what part of the country you live in, there’s sun, sea and sand to enjoy. Just remember to wear your sunscreen and be considerate of other surfers, especially when you’re out there surrounded by beginners. Nobody wants their day to end in injury.
